The park between Main Road and Gladstone  road behind the City hall is the original site of the dam where travelers from and to Cape Town rested during their travels from  early 1700.   Die parkie tussen Hoof-Straat en Gladstone-Straat is die oorspronklike plek waar die ou dammetjie was wat as drinkplek en uitspanplek gebruik is deur reisigers van en na die Kaap vanaf vroeg in 1700..

The DHS Chairperson welcomed everybody and thank everybody for their interest in this project. The reason behind this mornings meeting was to get interested parties together to (a.) put a sub-committee together and (b.) to talk about ways how to put a plan in action to upgrade the area. The sub-committee will branch into the DHS as one of their projects.

Danetta Smit, Ward 21 Councilor, has made a commitment that she has made provision for monies in her budget for this year as well as next year to be used for the upliftment of this area. Altus de Wet is currently overseeing this year’s project, however she felt that one can still give input as Altus de Wet has to employ a contractor to complete phase 1. Phase 2 will be handled and monitored by the sub-committee who will have to draw up a budget plan and be managed professionally with relevant statements etc. on a monthly basis to keep track of expenditure.

Dr Nico Walters, a historian, said that this area was originally used as camping site for the farmers in the early 1700 and that the parking area behind the Spur was used as a market. This peace of land, which once would have been turned into a parking area, should be declared a national historical site. The old water crib and Voortrekker monument, two historical beacons, must be preserved and people made aware of its history.

The suggestions were to: fence in the area and build a type of gazebo (old fashion one) when you enter the area with the old Durbanville logo on it. In the middle of the park a map of Durbanville to be erected that will show all the places of historical value to visitors. The old Voortrekker monument to be fenced off and benches be put up on the outside for people to sit on. A signage board will be put up outside the fence explaining its history. Same applies for the water crib that needs to be cleaned out and a proper sign be put up. The feeling was that signs also be put up throughout the town to show all the places of historical value in the town. Each sign will give you a brief history on the place in question. Sakkie Bosman said that he has a contact for the trees.

This area needs to become a focus point and it was suggested that the sub-committee gets in contact with Altus de Wet to find out what his current plans are for this project.
